What makes The Children’s Garden Company experience unique?
At The Children’s Garden Company our goal is to encourage children to switch off the television, computers and video games and to get outside and dig in the dirt!  As Children’s Docents at the San Francisco Botanical Garden, we interact with children who, quite often, are experiencing a botanical garden for the first time. The wonder and thrill these children express as they check out unusual plants, watch birds and bugs going about their business, and explore the narrow pathways and hideouts is contagious.

How would my child benefit from having a garden?
Our gardens provide children with a private place to get away and to call their own. We like to enclose each garden with a fence and gate which gives it a sense of privacy and adds to the child’s independence.

A garden provides children with hours of ongoing enjoyment and activities:

  • Playing in a playhouse and garden.
  • Inventing imaginary worlds.
  • Watching plants change with the seasons.
  • Making things from the fruits of their labor – strawberry pies, salsa, wreaths, flower arrangements.

Why is playing in nature so important for children?
The benefits of being in nature are numerous. Nature is unpredictable and surprising and allows children to utilize all their senses – touch, taste, sight, hearing and smell.
A garden provides a venue where children can enjoy unstructured free time where their imaginations can run wild, their creativity can bloom and, in general, where there “inner life” can expand.

In his recent book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving our Children from Nature-deficit Disorder, author Richard Louv states, “Stress reduction, greater physical health, a deeper sense of spirit, more creativity, a sense of play, even a safer life – these are the rewards that await a family when it invites more nature into children’s lives.”

Where are you located?  Can we use your service if we live outside the San Francisco Bay Area?
Our design office is located in San Anselmo and we work primarily in Marin, San Francisco, Napa, Sonoma, the East Bay and on the Peninsula.

Who installs the garden?
We install the Raised Vegetable Beds and Enclosed Vegetable Gardens and we can oversee the installation of more complicated gardens using a licensed landscape contractor of your choice.

How will I maintain my garden?
Our goal is to involve your child in the maintenance process as much as possible. This is, after all, the “interacting with nature” part of it! We offer several maintenance options. We can come once or twice a month and spend time with your child maintaining their garden together. We can also teach you how to maintain the garden if this is an activity that you would like to share with your child. You can also choose one of our maintenance packages if you prefer to leave the upkeep entirely to us. Regardless, you will be given a binder with complete instructions on how to care for and maintain the garden after installation.

How much does a garden cost?
Our Raised Vegetable Beds start at $855 and our Enclosed Vegetable Gardens start at $3,550.  Our Custom gardens are exactly that, they can be as extensive as your imagination and budget allows.   During the initial consultation, costs and budgets will be discussed. We will then follow-up with a design proposal, followed by a scope of work and pricing estimates.
